Caring for my hair is really important to me. When I was younger, I played with my hair: bleached it, colored it, stuck feathers in it, and everything in between. While it was fun, I instantly learned to regret it because my hair became weak, and I missed my natural color. Many years later, and my hair hasn’t been touched (except for my haircuts). I often get asked what I do to keep my hair so healthy, so I thought I would share!
Shampoo and Conditioner
I try to wash my hair as infrequently as possible. I do so by scheduling my workouts around my hair (I know, that seems insane, but it’s really simple). I’ll do pilates or a Melissa Wood Health Flow when my hair is cleanest, and on the days that my hair is at its dirtiest, I will do some form of cardio. That way I am only washing my hair when necessary. On average I wash my hair 2-3 times a week. My current favorite shampoo and conditioner combos are the Amika Volume and Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner. I love Amika products because they are cruelty-free and vegan. Their packaging is also adorable! When washing my hair I make sure to really give my scalp a good massage. Doing so, promotes circulation and will help with hair growth. I also like to rinse with cool water to help close the hair cuticle, which will make your hair shinier.
Detangler
After the shower, I like to use a detangler. I look for a product that will moisturize my hair, help untangle any knots, and has a built-in heat protectant. I am currently using Living Proof’s Restore Perfecting Spray, and I have been loving it. It leaves my hair feeling silky smooth, and if I decide to blow dry and style it, I know my hair is protected from any heat. I also really like Drybar’s Prep Rally Prime and Prep Detangler. Both products leave my hair smooth and protected.
Styling my Hair
I try to only style my hair when necessary, and if I am going to style it, pick and choose how. For example, if I am going to straighten my hair, I like to let my hair air dry; so that I am only using one heated tool rather than two. Obviously, there are numerous times where I don’t have the time to wait for it to dry, so I will use multiple tools, but I try to do so only if needed. When I am styling my hair, I love to blow-dry it with some volumizing mousse. I am currently using Amika’s Plus Size Perfect Body Mousse, but I also have loved Wella’s EIMI Extra Volume Mousse. If I decide to straighten my hair, I like to use hair oil after I am done. It keeps my hair looking silky and gets rid of any flyaways. My absolute favorite is Drybar’s 100 Proof Smoothing Oil.
Supplements
Taking care of your hair starts within. Making sure that you have all the right vitamins is important. To ensure that my hair stays healthy, I take Collagen tablets daily and will add collagen creamer to my coffee or collagen powder to my smoothies. My favorite brand for the extra collagen is Vital Proteins. Their stuff is amazing and doesn’t have a funky flavor.
Hair is something that, just like your skin, you should take care of. These are the few things that I do, and I have definitely seen a difference in my overall hair’s texture and fullness. If you have any tips, let me know in the comments below!
